Swedish Lapland: 7 Days Beneath the Northern Lights

Sleeping in an ice hotel, gliding on a sled, gazing at the stars… and falling in love with the silence.

"Some journeys make us discover a country. And then there are those that make us slow down, breathe, and reconnect with what truly matters."

When we arrived in Lapland, the thermometer read -18°C. The silence was almost unsettling. No traffic noise. No ringing phones. Only the snow crunching beneath our steps. In that moment, we understood that this trip would not be a simple romantic getaway.

It was going to become a memory etched forever.

Day 1 — Welcome beyond the Arctic Circle

"200 km beyond the Arctic Circle, under the magical light of the northern lights, lies the ICEHOTEL."

After a flight to Kiruna, the road cuts through vast forests of birch and spruce.

Good to know: The flight between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Kiruna Airport takes only 90 minutes, and you can also get there in 14 hours by train from Stockholm.

The landscape turns completely white. The sun grazes the horizon for only a few hours before disappearing.

Off to Jukkasjärvi, a small Lapland village where the most famous ice hotel in the world is born every winter.

The Icehotel is not just a hotel. Each room is a true work of art sculpted from ice. No two are alike.

When evening comes, you sleep beneath a thick reindeer hide, in an extreme-cold sleeping bag. Strangely… we've never slept better.

What the hotel says: As winter arrives in Kiruna, creators from around the world gather to build the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, using ice from the frozen Torne River. This unique and breathtaking hotel is reinvented every year. From the northern lights to the midnight sun, the Icehotel offers an unforgettable experience all year round.

✔ Sleep in an ice hotel

Day 2 — The kingdom of the Huskies

Early morning… A pack of eager huskies is waiting for you. The guide unleashes the dogs. In a matter of seconds… silence returns.

The sled glides between snow-covered pines. The icy wind stings your cheeks. But your heart feels incredibly light. At noon, lunch around a fire in a trapper's cabin.

Then a traditional sauna. And an outdoor Nordic bath. Yes. Even when it's -20°C.

✔ Sled ride

✔ Couples spa

Day 3 — The magic of the Sami

Today, an encounter with the Sami people. Reindeer herders for centuries. You will learn to feed the reindeer. To listen to their legends. To understand their way of life.

Lunch is served in a traditional lavvu around a wood fire.

In the evening… our first candlelit dinner. Candles. Sheepskins. Smoked fish. Wild berries. With that feeling that time has stopped.

✔ Romantic dinner

Day 4 — Chasing the northern lights

It's impossible to predict exactly where they will appear. The guide checks the forecasts. Then takes you to the middle of nowhere. For more than an hour… Nothing! Then suddenly the sky turns green, then purple, and it begins to dance.

The northern lights are probably the most beautiful natural spectacle you can ever witness.

In that moment… you are lost in contemplation, no one speaks, spellbound before a show that nothing can rival.

✔ Stargazing

Day 5 — A day just for two

By now we are fully immersed in this majestic nature, where every moment feels suspended. After these adventurous days at the heart of the snowy landscapes, it's time for absolute relaxation. To extend this parenthesis of serenity, we alternate between float baths, sauna, outdoor jacuzzi and a couples massage, while the silence of Lapland wraps around every breath. Then comes one of those simple moments you never forget: a steaming hot chocolate, comfortably settled in front of the crackling fire, as the polar night quietly falls behind the windows.

✔ Romantic spa

Day 6 — The enchanted forest

A snowshoe hike, the lakes are frozen, here you can spot moose tracks and yet the forest stays silent, only the sparkling snow crunches beneath our steps. It's magical.

In the afternoon, a couples photoshoot. Because some emotions deserve to be immortalised.

In the evening, one last gourmet dinner beneath the stars.

Day 7 — The return

Already time to leave… And we realise we are not just going home with one more line on our bucket list. We are going home a little different. Sleeping in an ice hotel, crossing the forests on a sled, gazing at the northern lights… all of it will stay engraved in our memories. But the real gift is elsewhere.

This timeless parenthesis reminded us how powerful, silent and deeply soothing nature can be. Faced with these immensities of ice, with the northern lights and the endless forests, you naturally find your rightful place. Humility replaces the superfluous, time slows down, and what truly matters comes back into focus.

Travelling is not just about discovering a new country. It's about accepting to change your perspective, to meet other cultures, other ways of living, and ultimately to better understand yourself. Here, borders fade away and you understand that we are all part of the same balance.

This week in Lapland didn't just give us extraordinary memories. It reminded us that sometimes all it takes is stepping away from the noise to hear what truly matters once again.
